The Assistant Teacher works directly under the guidance of a Lead Teacher, providing support in planning, initiating, and implementation of appropriate daily activities, which promote positive development and learning based on the strengths, interests, and needs of all the children in his or her class/group. They assist the teacher in communicating regularly with the parent(s)/guardian(s) of each child in his/her class/group about the development of their child(ren). Duties include but are not limited to:
  • Maintain a safe and nurturing environment for children: Under the general supervision of the Lead Teacher, the Assistant Teacher enforces the health and safety rules; identifies and takes appropriate action to eliminate unhealthy and unsafe conditions; demonstrates care and affection for each individual child in his/her care; monitors special medical needs; and records the administering of prescription medications. The Assistant Teacher models the skills and behavior necessary to meet the standards of the center, NAEYC, and of licensing. They remain alert and attentive at all times.
  • Participate in programs and activities that implement the Center's curriculum for each age group: Under the supervision of the Lead Teacher, the Assistant Teacher conducts activities that implement the weekly and daily lesson plans. They participate in maintaining written records and portfolios on all children under his/her care, and assure that standards are being met within the program.
  • Develop and maintain a mutually supportive relationship with individual parents that enables both parents and teachers to meet each child's needs: The Assistant teacher reports and/or discusses information regarding children and/or classroom activities with the Lead Teacher. This information is used by the Lead Teacher in providing developmentally appropriate curriculum, parent-teacher conferences, and providing daily information for families.
  • Comply with statutory, regulator, licensing, and accreditation requirements: Under the supervision of the Lead Teacher, the Assistant Teacher adheres to current written requirements; notifies the Director and/or Lead Teacher of existing or potential deficiencies within his/her classroom or the Center overall; and verifies that compliance deficiencies are corrected.
  • Perform other duties as assigned including, but not limited to office support, working on university relations, promoting/assisting in recruitment and enrollment of clients, requesting materials, etc.


Qualifications

An Assistant Teacher in a Child Development Center shall be at least eighteen (18) years of age and shall have earned at least one of the following:
  • An Associate's or more advanced degree from an institution accredited by an agency recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education or the Council for Higher Education Accreditation;
  • A High School diploma or its equivalent, and have a current CDA credential, which specifies that the individual is qualified to serve as an Assistant Teacher for the age classification with whom he or she will work;
  • A High School diploma or its equivalent, and certification of training and competence in the field of early childhood education or early childhood development from a duly authorized vocational high school - provided that he or she earns a CDA credential within two (2) years of the effective date of these regulations; or
  • A High School diploma or its equivalent and have at least one (1) year of supervised occupational experience working with children in a licensed District of Columbia Child Development Center or its equivalent in another jurisdiction - provided that he or she earns a CDA credential within two (2) years of the effective date of these regulations.


Must be able to:
  • Lift and carry up to 40 pounds
  • Use a wide range of motion which includes, but not limited to, sitting down and standing up with children, getting up off and onto the floor, moving quickly, walking, running, hopping, dancing, pushing, pulling, and bending.
  • Work at least 2 hours daily outside in temperatures of between 32 and 90 degrees with conditions such as sunny, cloudy, overcast or damp with dry, wet, or snowy ground.
